A live EU shop. Names removed.

I tried to shop without a mouse.

A mid-size EU online shop that sells building materials, covered by the European Accessibility Act. 15 pages, phone and desktop, keyboard only, checked against WCAG 2.2 AA.

estimate to fix all of it

How bad is it?

  • Blocker: a customer can't finish buying
  • High: they finish, with a lot of guessing
  • Medium: annoying and slow
  • Low: fix when you're in that code

The 5 worst, in plain words

  1. Blocker

Products with a choice can't be bought by keyboard.

When a product needs a length or pack size, the choice is hidden from the keyboard. "Add to cart" then fails with "length is required". 6 of 21 products checked.

Every customer who can't pick a length buys somewhere else.

  2. High

Login and contact fields lose their labels.

A hidden help form reuses the same field ids, so a screen reader reads the visible e-mail, name and phone fields with no name.

A customer who can't log in or write to you can't buy, and can complain.

  3. High

Add to cart is out of reach on listings.

On category and search pages, add to cart, compare and wishlist are links with no address. 115 presses of Tab on a listing page, 0 stops on them.

Shoppers have to open every product page just to buy one.

  4. High

On phones, the product menu won't open.

The "product categories" toggle is a plain box, not a button. The keyboard skips it and a screen reader doesn't know it opens a menu.

On a phone, keyboard and screen reader users can't browse your categories at all.

  5. High

You can't see where you are.

Add to cart, the cart, the main menu and the cookie accept button show no change at all when they get keyboard focus.

A customer who can't see where they are leaves.

Fix first

  1. Make the length and pack choices reachable by keyboard, and announce the error.
  2. Give every button a visible focus style.
  3. Turn card buttons and the phone menu into proper buttons, and give form fields their own ids.

Week 1. After it, a keyboard user can find and buy every product.
